It’s my final night in Jamaica and after lots of hard work I get to relax! And there’s no better place to do it than the Altamont West Hotel. It’s the best, I’ve stayed at so far, rivaling the Courtleigh in Kingston which was in my number 1 category. (I’ll blog about the other hotels later, dont worry, you won’t miss out!)
Why do I think the Altamont West Hotel (AWH) is so awesome? Well first off, the decor is amazing! (5 / 5 stars) Despite being located on the “Hip Strip” – a vibrant and noisy length of road in western tourist town Montego Bay (Mo’ Bay to the locals), AWH manages to create a get away right as you climb the stairs to reception. Burnt orange walls warm you, various statues line the walls interchanged with comfy chairs. A sun-bathed balcony with more chairs, a piano and a lovely view of the bay are to your left. I was ready to lay down right there!
Checking in was simple however it felt like it took a little longer than it needed to, she had to handwrite our info on the slips for their records. However she was really pleasant so I didn’t mind as much. wait – 2.5 stars, service 3.5 stars.
My room is 301, up the stairs at the end of the balcony, and there is no elevator. Good thing we only walk with carry-ons! My room is lovely (3.5 – 4 stars)! Nice big comfy king sized bed, flat screen tv facing the bed so you know there will be a TV marathon tonight! (big bang theory –> grey’s anatomy –> scandal, hell yeah!)
Bathroom (3/5 stars) is neat and very clean, no worrying grey streaks on the tiles or in the bathtub. However, the water temperature fluctuates as it did at every other hotel I’ve stayed at except the Courtleigh. So when staying at low / middle end hotels, be prepared to dodge cold currents in the shower!
Room Freebies (2.5 stars) – we got 2 bars of beauty soap, a bottle of “Essential” conditioning shampoo (tried it, not very condition-y) and a bottle of “Essential” hand and body lotion (have not tried but has a generic scent).
Now my number 1 con – I cannot get internet in the room!! (1/5 stars) I can get internet outside the door but step inside and the internet disappears! I can see the router from the doorway but still nothing once you cross the threshold! I prefer to be typing this in my comfy bed not in the chair outside. (This is so going on the guest comments!)
I went for a dip in the pool to relax and out there is lovely! Again the decor is “on point” and made up for the lack of internet in the room. Whimsical wire statues of various animals playing instruments, lounge chairs on white gravel-sand, comfy couches and artistic rock seats. Truly felt like my own piece of paradise.
3.5 – 4 stars
The Altamont West is your little piece of paradise in the midst of a vibrant tourist -y stretch. You’re in walking distance to great nightclubs, restaurants (try The Pelican Grill – great food there), clean, tranquil beaches and souvenir spots. The restaurant decor is beautiful, artistic and calming. Room are simple yet lovely with modern comforts such as flat screen tv’s and my favourite – an ipod dock! Even the peeve about no internet in the rooms and possible lack of business centre can’t bring this private paradise down. I’ll definitely be back!
